개정판을 내며
그림책 『이 땅의 비밀』은 초판 당시 전국의 초·중·고등학교 선생님 60여 분의 한 줄 추천과 함께 많은 관심을 받았던 지구과학 그림책입니다. 선생님들의 추천사는 초판 1쇄에 실렸습니다.
또한 미국 프린스턴대학교에서 전기공학을 전공하고 UCLA 지구물리학 및 우주물리학 박사학위를 받고 ‘로스 알라모스 미국 국립 연구소’에서 컴퓨터 유체 역학 분야를 연구해 온 세계적 지구 물리학자 존 바움가드너( Dr. John Baumgardner) 박사가 감사하게도 이 책의 초판을 읽고 내용에 대한 최종 점검과 추천 서문을 써 주었습니다. 이 추천 서문은 초판 3쇄부터 실리게 되었지요.
출간 후 『이 땅의 비밀』은 세계 5개 국어로 번역되었습니다. 지금은 아이에서 어른까지 많은 사랑을 받으며 국내는 물론 여러 나라의 독자분들이 꾸준히 찾아주시는 책이 되었습니다.
처음 책을 내며 아쉬웠던 점은 꼭 싣고 싶었던 도움말의 이미지들을 충분히 실을 수 없었던 것이었습니다. 그래서 그동안 책의 내용을 좀 더 잘 전달할 수 있는 도움말의 이미지들을 꾸준히 찾아 준비해 왔습니다. 이제 개정판을 내며, 10여 개의 도움말 이미지들을 업그레이드 교체하였습니다. 그림책의 글은 이미 국내외 지구 과학자 여러분의 꼼꼼한 검토가 있었고, 초판 3쇄부터는 존 바움가드너 박사님의 최종 점검을 거친 내용이라 수정없이 진행되었습니다.
또한 책의 내용을 더욱 잘 표현할 수 있도록 표지를 교체하였고, 부제목도 ‘지구 속에 숨겨진 비밀을 찾아라!’ 로 변경하었습니다.

For the 2nd Edition
<The Secret Under the Earth> is an earth science picture book that received much attention when it was first published, accompanied by one-line endorsements from around 60 elementary, middle, and high school teachers across Korea. These teacher endorsements were included in the first printing of the first edition.
In addition, Dr. John Baumgardner—a world-renowned geophysicist who studied Electrical Engineering at Princeton University, earned his PhD in Geophysics and Space Physics from University of California, Los Angeles, and conducted research in computational fluid dynamics at Los Alamos National Laboratory—graciously read the first edition of this book, gave it a final content review, and wrote a foreword of recommendation. His foreword has been included beginning with the third printing of the first edition.
Since its publication, <The Secret Under the Earth> has been translated into five languages. It has since become a beloved book for readers of all ages—from children to adults—and continues to be sought after not only in Korea but also by readers in various countries around the world.
One of the regrets we had when the book was first published was that we were not able to include enough of the explanatory images we had hoped to feature in the supplementary sections. Since then, we have continued to search for and prepare better supporting images that could help communicate the book’s content more clearly. Now, with this revised edition, more than ten supplementary images have been upgraded and replaced.
The main text of the picture book had already undergone careful review by earth scientists both in Korea and abroad, and beginning with the third printing of the first edition, it also received a final review by Dr. John Baumgardner. For that reason, the text itself has been carried over without revision.
In addition, the cover has been redesigned to better reflect the content of the book, and the subtitle has been changed to “Discover the Hidden Secrets Beneath the Earth!”
